Slots origination and further development

Nowadays, it is hard to imagine gambling industry without such an integral part of popular casinos entertainment as slot machines, other known as 'fruit machines' or 'one armed bandits'.

First slots seem to appear about 120 years ago and since their creation they have been one of the easiest and most widespread gambling games ever.

Pitt and Sittman Company

Particularly, slot history originated in 1891 when two talented brothers Pitt and Sittman Company designed the first slot machine, which is considered to be a predecessor of modern slot apparatus. Those mechanisms consisted of 5 reels and provided about 50 cards pictures in total. Gamblers needed to put a nickel inside and pull special levers, which launch the reels spinning, and in such way generated different symbols combinations.

The most interesting thing concerning those slots gaming machines is that they implied no payoff in terms of money: some of them offered a free beer and other drinks, while most prestigious apparatus could have provided lucky players with cigars.

Charles Fey

Although those were the brother Company, who developed the first machine, the true father of the idea of slots and its elaboration is considered Charles Fey, a German immigrant, who moved to the US and settled in California looking for an American dream incarnation.

In 1887 he achieved his goal and completed the Liberty Bell, so well-known slot machine nowadays, in his own basement. However, the machine differed significantly from modern designed apparatus as it weighted more than 100 pounds and was made of iron. The symbols that the Liberty Bell was equipped with were also different: there were no fruit pictures, but horseshoes, playing cards suits (hearts, spades, clubs and diamonds) and a star.

Furthermore, Charles did not stop and continued his research works, which resulted in the Operator Bell Slot apparatus. That was the first machine that had already contained famous fruit symbols. Actually, such changes in design were caused by intensive government pressure on gambling industry. And Charles Fey managed to find ways around the law exchanging gambling symbols of card suits to innocent fruits.

Stephen Mill

The further slot history is tightly connected to Stephen Mill, who was an owner of the Mills Novelty Company. In 1907 Charles Fey decided to combine the efforts with a talented Canadian in order to improve slot machines design. That cooperation resulted in a creation of Mills Liberty Bell, which was equipped with a gooseneck entrance for coins and also included fruit symbols.

Further, Stephen Mills created famous Silent Bell, which worked much quieter than its predecessors, and firstly introduced a possibility of double jackpot winning.

Big Bertha

In 1950' the next breakthrough in slot history happened when mechanical machines were substituted with more modern electro-mechanical brothers. The first apparatus, where such technique was exploited, called Big Bertha and rapidly became the most popular casino entertainment.

In 1980's started the era of computerized slots, which changed slot machines design completely, as new high tech technologies allowed to make slot apparatus without physical reels and body, which increased gaming possibilities essentially.
